25 Ganga Ram patients die as hospitals wait for oxygen, Arvind Kejriwal pleads for help

Twenty-five of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s "sickest" COVID-19 patients died in 24 hours and the lives of 60 more hung in precarious balance, officials said on Friday as the scramble for oxygen got more increasingly more frantic in hospitals across the national capital. Sources said “low pressure oxygen” could be the likely cause of the deaths in Ganga Ram, one of the city’s biggest and most high-profile hospitals, where healthcare staff was reduced to manually ventilating patients in its ICU and emergency department.

The hospital announced the deaths shortly after 8 am. After the unprecedented crisis of the morning, an oxygen tanker did reach Ganga Ram in central Delhi at 9.20 am, but it was enough to last up to about five hours depending on consumption, an official at Ganga Ram said.

“It is wrong to say the deaths occurred due to oxygen shortage. We provided oxygen to patients manually when the pressure dipped in the ICU,” SGRH Chairman Dr D S Rana said. (PTI)

Covid-19 Update | All that happened yesterday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to cancel his visit to West Bengal on Friday to address poll rallies on behalf of BJP candidates in order to chair high-level meetings on Covid-19 in New Delhi on April 23. In a tweet on Thursday, PM Modi said he will not be going to poll-bound West Bengal on Friday due to high-level meetings to review the prevailing Covid-19 situation.

Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court took note of the "grim" situation created by the massive surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths and said it expects the Centre to come out with a "national plan" to deal with proper distribution of oxygen and essential drugs for the patients.

Noting that India was currently facing a national emergency-like situation, the SC bench led by Chief Justice SA Bobde asked the Centre to submit its plan on Covid preparedness, including the details of the nationwide vaccination drive plan.

Also, in the wake of reports that some states blocked supply of medical oxygen to others, the Centre on Thursday directed states to ensure uninterrupted production and supply of medical oxygen and its transport along inter-state borders and said the district magistrate and superintendent of police of the district concerned will be held responsible if there is any violation of its order.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court observed that the Covid-19 situation in the city has turned "precarious" with many hospitals running out of oxygen and directed the Centre to ensure the gas is supplied to the city as per the planned allocation and without any hindrances.

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court issued important directions on oxygen supply and distribution of Remdesivir during a special hearing held at 8 pm on Wednesday.
